ASTM F1346 Safety-Cover Performance Standard
Latham solid and mesh safety covers meet or exceed ASTM F1346-91. The standard sets performance-testing and labeling requirements for covers designed to restrict access to the water by children under five. Correct installation, use, and water management are required.
Where to Find Your Latham Cover Serial Number
Look for the serial number beneath the barcode on your safety-cover warranty document. It may also be on the white warning tag sewn to the cover. The example below shows the number marked “SN.”
- Find the number marked “SN.” In Latham’s example, it appears below the barcode.
- Copy your own number exactly. Use the serial number rather than the pool size or material description printed nearby.
- Keep the document. You may need it to check the original cover specifications or warranty terms.

Can Your Latham Pool Cover Be Repaired?
A repair may extend your cover’s life when the surrounding material is still sound.
When Repair Makes Sense
Some pool covers can be repaired; others are better replaced. Age plays an important role, but the condition of the fabric, straps and stitching matters just as much. A cover with isolated damage and otherwise sound material may be a good candidate for repair.
On an older cover, replacing a worn strap or renewing the stitching may not provide a lasting solution. The new strap and stitching can be stronger than the aged material they attach to, leaving the surrounding fabric vulnerable to tearing or further failure. Repairing one area does not restore strength to the rest of the cover.
That’s why an inspection considers the entire cover, not just the visible damage. If repair is practical, you can review the recommended work and price. If the surrounding material is too deteriorated, replacement may be the safer and more economical option.
Latham Mesh vs. Solid Safety Pool Covers
Mesh allows rain and melted snow into the pool through the fabric. Solid fabric blocks water, with drainage concentrated in a designated area. Sunlight blockage and fabric weight also differ between models.
Mesh Safety Covers
Mesh lets rain and melted snow drain into the pool without a cover pump. Its lighter fabric makes it easier to handle during installation and storage.

Solid Safety Covers
1000HS HyPerLite solid fabric blocks sunlight and keeps debris out. Rain and melted snow enter the pool through the integrated Invis-A-Drain, rather than through the fabric.

- 12 oz. fabric is heavier than the mesh options.
- The center drain needs to stay clear of debris.

Understanding prorated coverage: you pay a portion of the replacement cost based on the cover’s age and the warranty schedule. Coverage applies to qualifying manufacturing defects. Review the warranty supplied with your cover for exclusions and any freight, labor, or installation charges.
Cover Construction and Routine Care
Reinforced seams, secure hardware, and clear drainage help your cover perform as intended. Inspect these areas each season and follow the instructions supplied with your cover.
Seams and Stitching
Solid and mesh covers have interlocked, double-overlapped seams. Box stitching reinforces straps and step areas with thread that resists UV exposure and pool chemicals.
Springs and Hardware
Stainless steel single-coil springs and low-profile D-rings help keep the cover secure. Check the condition and placement of existing hardware before reusing it with a replacement.
Edges and Contact Points
Hemmed edges are reinforced between layers of webbing. Coping strips and protective pads help reduce wear where the cover meets the pool edge and step nosings.
Solid-Cover Drain
Invis-A-Drain channels water through ¼-inch holes spaced every 6 inches above a 12-inch mesh panel. Keep this drainage area clear of leaves and debris.
Raised Walls and Other Features
Steps, spas, rails, raised walls, and water features need the right fit and attachments. The original factory pattern includes these features, so the replacement follows the same layout.

Should I Select a Mesh or Solid Latham Cover?
Mesh drains rain and melted snow through the fabric and is lighter to handle. Solid fabric blocks all sunlight, with water passing through a designated drain. Consider handling, sunlight blockage, and drainage maintenance alongside your pool’s layout. Compare mesh and solid covers above.
What Colors Are Available?
9000MX Max Shade uses a Black/Gray combination woven into one fabric. 7000MS, 5000M, and 1000HS have Green, Blue, Gray, and Tan options. We confirm availability for your replacement when preparing the quote. See the model and color comparison above.
Does a Solid Latham Cover Need a Pump?
The current 1000HS has an integrated Invis-A-Drain for rain and meltwater. Do not assume an older solid cover has the same arrangement. Check the drainage system and instructions for your existing cover and for the replacement being quoted.
Will a Replacement Use My Existing Deck Anchors?
Yes. The replacement is made from Latham’s original factory pattern, so the straps match your existing anchors without drilling new holes.
Is This for a Coverstar Automatic Cover?
